Edward Ouchi Reconsidered
Seth Bardo (1967) responds to the following request by Hilary (“Lori”) Wallach Marshak (1968): “I wonder how many Wheatleyites had the same experience.”
“Lori’s experience of having been in Mr. Ouchi’s English class mirrored my own. I found his approach to language incomprehensible, believing I would never be able to figure out his quixotic method, that I was doomed to fail.
An empathetic person, Mr.Ouchi, his face illuminated by an overhead projector, armed with a pointer, enthusiastically set forth his construct: Boinguage. He lost me from the outset, because his rigid construction, based on memorization of his created language, never made sense to me.
Like Lori, I became a teacher. I taught English at a public school and, later, for many years, at Andover. I quickly discovered during my early tenure that language should be presented as mutable, as an invitation to students to make their own discoveries, as a form that encourages them to experiment, to employ grammar as a tool to nurture better writers and thinkers.”

It amazes me the quality of what you provide to us so frequently. I know you are so busy and I truly appreciate the importance you place on Wheatley. As someone just wrote, you don’t appreciate what you had until it’s gone, but you have kept it alive.
It is so great to hear about what past school mates are doing. It is amazing what we had and what Wheatley produced.
I tell friends about what you produce and how often you send the Newsletters.
Wheatley was special.
